Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said House Speaker Kevin McCarthy “did the right thing for the country” by working to avoid a government shutdown.
“I would hope that that kind of mature leadership isn’t punished by the most extreme members of his caucus,” she told PBS NewsHour co-anchor Geoff Bennett in an exclusive interview taped Tuesday.
Clinton’s comments come as Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., filed a motion late Monday in an effort to remove McCarthy as House speaker. McCarthy said that a vote on the motion would take place on Tuesday.
