WATERTOWN, NY (June 12, 2023); To celebrate, support and learn about Pride Month, WPBS-TV is teaming up with the Flower Memorial Library to present a free film screening of POV production: “Pier Kids,” directed by Elegance Bratton on Monday, June 19th from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm in the South Reading Room of Flower Memorial Library in Watertown, NY. This powerfully empathetic documentary is an immersion into the lives of the homeless queer and transgender youth who have forged a community of their own on downtown Manhattan’s Christopher Street Pier.
DESCRIPTION OF THE FILM: On the Christopher Street Pier in New York City, homeless queer and trans youth of color forge friendships and chosen families, withstanding tremendous amounts of abuse while working to carve out autonomy in their lives. With intimate, immersive access to these fearless young people, Pier Kids highlights the precarity and resilience of a community many choose to ignore. Truer Than Fiction Award, Independent Spirit Awards.
A discussion will follow the screening, led by a guest speaker from the Q Center. The Q Center at ACR Health is a safe spaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth, their families, and allies to gather, share, and receive support. Q Center programming promotes equality, celebrates diversity, provides resources that cultivate pride and leadership skills, and strives to create a safe and inclusive community for all. The Q Center program provides services in Central New York, Northern New York, and The Mohawk Valley.
