Squid Game debuted on Netflix in September and quickly became the streaming network’s biggest global series launch ever. But is everyone around the world watching the same story? Some viewers have found differences between the original Korean dialogue and how the show is translated into English — and it’s not the first foreign language production to face criticism over translation. The controversy is raising questions about how the entertainment industry can improve translations, what it takes to create good subtitles and if any show can ever be translated completely into another language. Here are four things you need to know about translating a foreign language film or TV show.
