WPBS is offering The Gardener, a 13-week series available to Public Television stations beginning April 2002.

Each show of The Gardener blends the best of both worlds: informative, useful how-to segments of interest to both the home gardener and the professional gardener, and tours of some of the most beautiful gardens in the United States and Canada.

From planting to pruning to harvesting, the how-to segments will share helpful information designed to help every gardener get their flowers, vegetables, shrubs, and trees looking their best.

Some of the gardens to be featured include Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, and the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina. We’ll also visit tropical gardens in Florida and desert gardens in Arizona. In addition, we have a couple of extremely prestigious and special treats: a very rare tour of the grounds of the Prime Minister's residence in Ottawa, Canada, and Canada's Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief, Her Excellency the Right Honorable Adrienne Clarkson, joins us for a tour of Rideau Hall, Canada's equivalent of The White House.

The Gardener is hosted by Ed Lawrence, who was the Chief of Greenhouses and Grounds Services at the Official Residences in Ottawa for 20 years. His duties included the gardens of the residences of the Prime Minister and the Governor General of Canada. Ed is now Horticultural Specialist for the Official Residences Division, Environment, Capital Lands and Parks Branch of the National Capital Commission. In his current position, Ed gives gardening advice, consults on landscape projects, helps develop landscaping plans, and talks with the media. Ed is also host of a province-wide Ontario radio call-in gardening segment for Ontario Today. He is exceedingly renowned in Canada as one of their top gardeners. Ed has two college degrees from Humber College, one as a landscape technician, and one in landscape technology. Ed appears courtesy of the National Capital Commission of Ottawa.
